[Asia Economy New York=Special Correspondent Joselgina] Netflix's original Korean drama 'Ojingeo Game' (Squid Game) has been nominated for the Drama Series Award at the Emmy Awards, known as the Academy Awards of the American broadcasting industry. Four cast members, including the lead actor Lee Jung-jae, were also nominated for acting awards.
According to the New York Times (NYT) and others, the Academy of Television Arts & Sciences (ATAS), which organizes the Emmys, announced the nominees for the 74th Emmy Awards by category on the 12th (local time).
Ojingeo Game was nominated for the Drama Series Award. This is the first time a non-English language drama has been nominated for the Emmy Drama Series Award. At this year's ceremony, Ojingeo Game will compete for the award against seven other works including 'Succession,' 'Stranger Things,' 'Better Call Saul,' 'Euphoria,' 'Ozark,' 'Severance,' and 'Yellowjackets.'
Additionally, Ojingeo Game set a record for the most nominations for a foreign-language drama with a total of 14 nominations, including the series award.
Lee Jung-jae, who gave a passionate performance as the protagonist 'Seong Gi-hun,' was nominated for Best Actor, competing against strong actors such as Jason Bateman from 'Ozark,' Brian Cox from 'Succession,' Bob Odenkirk from 'Better Call Saul,' Adam Scott from 'Severance,' and Jeremy Strong from 'Succession.'
Park Hae-soo, who played the role of 'Cho Sang-woo,' and Oh Young-soo, who gave a powerful performance as 'Oh Il-nam,' were both nominated for Best Supporting Actor in the drama category. Jung Ho-yeon, who portrayed 'Kang Sae-byeok,' was nominated for Best Supporting Actress in the drama category.
Furthermore, director Hwang Dong-hyuk, who directed and wrote the drama, was nominated for Best Director and Best Writing in the drama category, and Lee Yoo-mi, who played 'Ji-yeong,' a character who deliberately loses the game and chooses death, was nominated for Best Supporting Actress.
The awards ceremony to decide the winners of the 74th Emmy Awards will be held on September 12 and will be broadcast live on NBC.
