[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gangwon Province is collaborating with Gangneung City and Pyeongchang County to revitalize the value of Olympic heritage and transform it into a new tourist attraction by creating digital cultural spaces within Olympic facilities.
On the 12th, Gangwon Province announced that it was selected for the "New Deal Project for Inter-Local Government Cooperation" organized by the Ministry of the Interior and Safety, securing the maximum national subsidy of 2.5 billion KRW.
In line with the project’s purpose, which is led by local governments based on regional living areas, Gangwon Province, along with Gangneung City and Pyeongchang County?the host sites of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics?will collaborate regionally to repurpose Olympic venues and create immersive digital content cultural spaces within Olympic heritage facilities.
Advanced digital media technologies such as media facades and interactive installations will be applied to the exterior walls of Olympic cultural heritage facilities. A total project budget of 5 billion KRW (2.5 billion KRW national funds and 2.5 billion KRW local funds) will be invested by next year in the Gangneung Hockey Center, the Pyeongchang Winter Olympics Memorial Hall, and the Peace Theme Park.
Additionally, the project aims to complete the facilities before the 2024 Gangwon Winter Youth Olympics, linking with the advanced media art ice show (G-SHOW) currently underway at the Gangneung Hockey Center, thereby enhancing the value of Olympic heritage as a new tourist attraction.
Jo Gwan-mook, Director of Olympic Facilities at Gangwon Province, stated, "The regional cooperative system among Gangwon Province, Gangneung City, and Pyeongchang County, the key players of the 2018 Pyeongchang Winter Olympics, is expected to bring significant benefits such as enhanced cultural tourism competitiveness and local job creation.
