[Asia Economy Reporter Tae-min Ryu] Kumho Construction announced on the 11th that it has signed a contract for the ‘Aewol Water Purification Plant Advanced Water Treatment Facility Membrane Filtration Method Selection’ project in Jeju Island.

This project involves introducing a membrane filtration facility at the existing site of the Aewol Water Purification Plant. The Aewol Water Purification Plant is a facility capable of producing 23,000 tons of tap water per day, which previously supplied water after only undergoing a disinfection process on groundwater.

Recently, the Aewol Water Purification Plant has been promoting the application of the membrane filtration method to improve tap water quality and enhance reliability. The membrane filtration method is a state-of-the-art water treatment technology that physically filters harmful substances such as viruses and E. coli through multiple membranes with microscopic pores about 1/100 the thickness of a human hair, thereby purifying the water.

Kumho Construction also possesses reverse osmosis (RO) desalination technology that removes salts and contaminants from water to make it potable. Kumho Construction’s reverse osmosis technology has been applied to facilities such as the ‘Jeju Samyang 3 Water Source Advanced Water Treatment Facility’ and the ‘Daesan Coastal Industrial Complex Industrial Water Facility’ to supply clean water.

Kumho Construction expects that water purification plants applying the membrane filtration method to supply clean tap water will increase nationwide, including Jeju Island. Jeju Island is currently implementing the membrane filtration method at the Jocheon, Gangjeong, and Topyeong Water Purification Plants and is considering applying the membrane filtration method to all water purification plants across Jeju.

Starting with this project, Kumho Construction plans to actively pursue orders for membrane filtration introduction projects at water purification plants in Jeju Island. A Kumho Construction official stated, “In addition to future membrane filtration introduction projects at water purification plants, we will actively participate in reverse osmosis desalination introduction projects as well. Based on our extensive project experience, we will propose improvements and development plans regarding domestic membrane filtration-related systems and standards to lead the activation of membrane filtration technology in Korea.”
