[Asia Economy Reporter Park Hyun-joo] A man in his 30s who was caught by the police after brutally killing a kitten and hanging it on an elementary school commuting path in Pohang, Gyeongbuk, has been revealed to be the same person as the serial killer of stray cats at Handong University three years ago.

According to the Pohang Bukbu Police Station on the 10th, Mr. A was arrested last month on the 21st on charges of killing a 4-month-old stray kitten and hanging it with a string on the commuting path of an elementary school in Buk-gu, Pohang. The police secured CCTV footage and vehicle black box videos capturing the crime scene, and nine days after the incident, on the 30th of last month, they urgently arrested Mr. A at a coffee shop in Buk-gu.

Police investigation revealed that Mr. A’s fingerprints matched those of the perpetrator in an animal abuse case that occurred in the central shopping district of downtown Pohang in 2020. At that time, a cat’s corpse was also found hanging in an alley, and Mr. A reportedly admitted to the crime.

It was also revealed that some of the serial abuse cases of stray cats that occurred at Handong University three years ago were committed by Mr. A. This involved seven stray cats being abused, killed, or injured from August 2019 to March 2020. At that time, the cats were found dead hanging from trees or with their front paws severed.

A notebook was found among Mr. A’s belongings that recorded methods of systematically torturing and killing cats. He also posted warning signs stating that feeding cats was illegal, along with forged Pohang city logos, around various locations in Pohang city.

A police official stated, "During the investigation of additional crimes, he partially confessed to the Handong University abuse case as well. We also thank the citizens who actively cooperated in the investigation of the serial animal abuse case."
