10 Days Since the Launch of the 8th Civilian Administration... Lee Seongheon of Seodaemun, Choi Hogwon of Yeongdeungpo, and Jeon Seongsu of Seocho District Mayors Busy from Early Morning

[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] July 10th marks the 10th day since the launch of the 8th term of local government.

Seongheon Lee, Mayor of Seodaemun District, Hogwon Choi, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, and Seongsu Jeon, Mayor of Seocho District, among other Seoul district mayors, woke up early on this weekend day to tour their areas and start their daily routines.

In particular, the district mayors have more schedules on weekends and Sundays, so they begin their activities early in the morning.

Seongheon Lee, Mayor of Seodaemun District, said in a phone call with a reporter around 7 a.m. that “I wake up every day at 4 a.m. to visit Ansan, the mountain behind the area, and I have already been there today as well,” adding, “I am currently touring the district.” He mentioned that he checks for any road damages or potholes.

Having moved to Seodaemun District in the second year of middle school and lived there for 50 years, Mayor Lee is practically a “native of Seodaemun District.” He said, “Although I served twice as a member of the National Assembly representing Seodaemun District, after 10 days since taking office as mayor, I deeply feel that there is much to do for the community,” but added, “However, there are many issues that are difficult to resolve due to legal problems.”

Hogwon Choi, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo District, said, “On early weekend mornings, I personally walk along the Yeongdeungpo waterfront Olle Trail by Anyangcheon Stream and Saetgang River to inspect convenience facilities such as restrooms and sports facilities, and listen to the intentions of the citizens using them.” He also stated, “Upon taking office and assessing the work, I realized there are many local issues and that administrative services are becoming increasingly complex and diverse. I will work through them one by one in consultation with the central government and Seoul City.”

Seongsu Jeon, Mayor of Seocho District, appeared busy attending the Mayor’s Cup Soccer Tournament starting at 8 a.m. at Yangjae Neighborhood Park on the same day.

Before departing for the site, Mayor Jeon said, “I am happy and excited to be back in active service after four years.”

In particular, Mayor Jeon showed consideration for staff by minimizing the number of employees and secretaries working on Saturdays and Sundays to allow them to rest, which drew attention for his thoughtful attitude toward employees.

With the country facing difficulties both domestically and internationally due to the global economic crisis, Seoul district mayors are expected to be even more active in caring for vulnerable groups.
