[Asia Economy Reporter Donghyun Choi] Ant?nio Guterres, the United Nations Secretary-General, expressed his condolences on the 9th (local time) regarding the shooting death of former Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe, saying he felt "deep sorrow."
In a statement released through his spokesperson on the same day, Secretary-General Guterres said, "This incident, which occurred in Japan, one of the countries with the lowest gun crime rates, was a great shock," and added, "I extend my deepest condolences to the family of former Prime Minister Abe, the Japanese people, and the government."
He described former Prime Minister Abe as "a staunch advocate of multilateralism, a respected leader, and a supporter of the United Nations," and said, "I recall former Prime Minister Abe's commitment to promoting peace and security and to the UN's Sustainable Development Goals, advocating for universal human health." He further added, "As the longest-serving prime minister, he revitalized the national economy and devoted himself to the Japanese people."
Former Prime Minister Abe was shot by Tetsuya Yamagami while campaigning on a street in the Yamato-Saidaiji area of Nara City, Nara Prefecture, around 11:30 a.m. the previous day. He was transported to the hospital but died from excessive bleeding.
