[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Wooseok] A man in his 60s with 12 prior convictions for theft was sentenced to prison after being caught stealing ice cream and other items from a mart just one month after his release.

The Chuncheon District Court Criminal Division 2 (Presiding Judge Park Jinyoung) announced on the 7th that it sentenced A (67) to 1 year and 6 months in prison on charges of violating the Act on the Aggravated Punishment, etc. of Specific Crimes (theft).

A was charged with stealing two packs of dried snacks and one ice cream from a mart located in Jeongseon-gun, Gangwon Province on the morning of August 26 last year, and stealing a total of 12 ice creams, two packs of dried snacks, and one pack of gum in four separate incidents by September of the same year.

On November 26 last year, he was also caught by the owner while attempting to secretly steal two chapssaltteok (glutinous rice cakes) and one scrubber from a mart in Taebaek.

It was confirmed that A has 12 prior convictions related to theft, including a 2-year prison sentence in 2019 for theft and other charges.

The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant committed each crime of stealing or attempting to steal property inside the mart again without any remorse despite being within the recidivism period for similar crimes, which shows poor criminal nature," and "Considering the defendant’s 12 prior convictions related to theft, severe punishment is inevitable."
