[Asia Economy Reporter Moon Chaeseok] As COVID-19 cases have started to rise again, more than 18,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 PM on the 5th.

According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 PM on this day, a total of 18,606 people across 17 cities and provinces nationwide were confirmed positive for COVID-19.

This is 1,460 more than the previous day's count at the same time (17,146). It marks the second consecutive day with numbers in the high ten-thousands.

After a declining trend since March, the COVID-19 outbreak has recently reversed to an upward trend, and with the number of diagnostic tests increasing again on weekdays after dropping over the weekend, the number of confirmed cases also rose accordingly.

By 9 PM on this day, the number of confirmed cases was 8,761 higher than a week ago on the 28th of last month (9,845), a 1.9-fold increase, and 10,054 more than two weeks ago on the 21st of last month (8,552), a 2.2-fold increase.

Since there is still time until midnight when the count closes, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 6th is expected to be around 20,000.

The daily new confirmed cases over the past week from the 29th of last month were 10,455 → 9,591 → 9,523 → 10,713 → 10,053 → 6,253 → 18,147, averaging 10,676 per day. This is an increase of 3,529 cases compared to the previous week (June 22?28, 7,063 cases).

As of 9 PM on this day, new confirmed cases were 10,453 (56.2%) in the Seoul metropolitan area and 8,153 (43.8%) in non-metropolitan areas.

By region, confirmed cases were: Gyeonggi 5,069, Seoul 4,770, Gyeongnam 1,066, Incheon 1,042, Gyeongbuk 994, Chungnam 656, Busan 614, Gangwon 596, Daegu 550, Ulsan 518, Chungbuk 488, Jeonbuk 479, Jeonnam 459, Daejeon 453, Jeju 361, Gwangju 338, and Sejong 153.
