[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] With heatwave warnings causing daily electricity demand to reach record highs, this summer's heatwaves are expected to occur more frequently, prompting Gwangjin-gu to intensify its heatwave preparedness efforts.

The district has installed shade shelters at crosswalks since April and will extend the operation of neighborhood heatwave shelters until the end of September. In particular, visiting nurses will assist welfare planners in providing summer health care for elderly people living alone, seniors collecting recyclables, and those with chronic illnesses.

Additionally, 101 locations including senior centers, community centers, and welfare facilities will operate as heatwave shelters for the elderly from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Among these, 22 extended shelters will operate for an additional three hours until 9 p.m. on weekdays during heatwave warnings, and will be open from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. on weekends and holidays.

In this regard, District Mayor Kim Kyung-ho visited three district-run senior centers?Yonggok, Daewon, and Junggok 4-dong?located in Junggok 4-dong on the 5th to inspect the operation status of the heatwave shelters and communicate with the elderly residents.

Mayor Kim Kyung-ho stated, “With this year’s worst heatwave expected and the increased burden of cooling costs due to electricity rate hikes, we plan to do our best to protect vulnerable elderly people through the operation of heatwave shelters.”

On the afternoon of the 5th, Choi Ho-kwon, Mayor of Yeongdeungpo-gu (center), attended the 23rd anniversary ceremony of the Yeongdeungpo Cultural Center held at the Yeongdeungpo Cultural Center and encouraged the award recipients.

Hosted by the Yeongdeungpo Cultural Center and sponsored by Seoul City and Yeongdeungpo-gu, the event was organized to honor those who have contributed to the development of local culture, arts, and the Cultural Center on its 23rd anniversary.

On this day, Mayor Choi presented awards to six individuals for their outstanding cultural volunteer service.
