[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] As the COVID-19 outbreak has turned to an upward trend again, more than 17,000 new confirmed cases were reported nationwide by 9 p.m. on the 4th.


According to Seoul Metropolitan Government and other local governments, from midnight to 9 p.m. on that day, 17,146 people were confirmed positive for COVID-19 across 17 cities and provinces nationwide. This is about three times higher than the previous day's count at the same time (5,880). Based on the 9 p.m. tally, this is the highest number of confirmed cases in 40 days since May 25 (18,275). Also, it exceeded 10,000 again in three days following the 1st (10,202).


The number of confirmed cases by 9 p.m. on this day is 7,847 more than a week ago on the 27th of last month (9,299), and 8,360 more than two weeks ago on the 20th of last month (8,786). Since there is still time until midnight when the tally closes, the number of new confirmed cases to be announced on the 5th is expected to be in the high 10,000s.


As of 9 p.m. on this day, new confirmed cases were 10,445 (60.9%) in the metropolitan area and 6,701 (39.1%) in non-metropolitan areas. The number of confirmed cases by region is Seoul 4,779, Gyeonggi 4,714, Gyeongnam 1,074, Incheon 952, Busan 694, Gyeongbuk 657, Chungnam and Gangwon 532 each, Daegu 504, Ulsan 465, Daejeon 435, Chungbuk 412, Jeonbuk 401, Jeonnam 325, Gwangju 280, Sejong 117, and Jeju 273.
