[Asia Economy Reporter Seongpil Cho] The National Police Commission announced on the 4th that it held an 'On-site Staff Meeting for Police System Improvement' to discuss the direction for improving the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's police control plan.

At the meeting, all 7 members of the National Police Commission and 22 on-site staff from across the country attended to discuss the Ministry of the Interior and Safety's proposal to establish a Police Bureau, the role of the National Police Commission, and police system improvements. One police officer attending the meeting expressed concern, saying, "The Ministry of the Interior and Safety's plan to establish a new organization raises suspicions of a regression to a shameful past." Another participant worried, "The trust in the police that has been painstakingly built over 30 years could be lost in an instant."

The attendees commonly urged that the Police Commission, as a democratic control body over the police, should actively exercise its authority. Kim Ho-cheol, Chairman of the National Police Commission, said, "It was a valuable opportunity to hear the vivid stories of on-site staff," and added, "We will do our best to ensure that police system improvements proceed in a desirable direction by reflecting not only today's discussion results but also diverse opinions from various sectors of society."
