Macau Breached by COVID-19... Over 850 Infections in Half a Month

[Asia Economy Reporter Changhwan Lee] COVID-19 cases are rapidly increasing in Macau, and authorities are making efforts to contain the spread by repeatedly testing all residents.

Macau authorities announced last night that they will conduct three rounds of COVID-19 mass testing for all approximately 660,000 residents from 9 a.m. on the 4th to 6 p.m. on the 9th.

Since the start of the pandemic, Macau had only about 80 cumulative infections over two and a half years until mid-last month.

However, 852 people have been infected in just fifteen days since mid-last month, including 68 positive cases confirmed yesterday. This is more than ten times the cumulative infections over the past two and a half years.

Macau has not implemented a Chinese-style city lockdown, but most public sectors, schools, and entertainment establishments have already closed. Only takeout food is available at restaurants.

Macau casinos are still allowed to operate, but most employees are advised to stay at home.

Macau exempts travelers from mainland China’s low-risk COVID-19 areas from quarantine.
