"We Must Restore Dialogue and Compromise, the True Role of the Legislature"
[Asia Economy Reporter Kwon Hyun-ji] On the 4th, Jeong Jin-seok, a member of the People Power Party who was elected as the Deputy Speaker of the 21st National Assembly's second half, expressed his gratitude by saying, "I will do my best to restore dialogue and compromise, which are the essence of the legislature, and to become a true hall of public opinion."
On the same day, the ruling and opposition parties held a plenary session of the National Assembly and elected Jeong, a five-term lawmaker, as the Deputy Speaker representing the People Power Party with 223 votes in favor out of 258 total votes. In his acceptance speech, Jeong said, "For the first time in a while, the ruling and opposition parties have agreed on the election of the Speaker and Deputy Speakers. This is due to a sincere sense of responsibility that the organization of the National Assembly can no longer be delayed to overcome the serious livelihood crisis," adding, "We must no longer ignore or neglect the hardships faced by the people outside the National Assembly."
He continued, "I believe the more urgent issue now is the formation of standing committees," and emphasized, "Can there be a complete victory in politics? Both the ruling and opposition parties must make efforts with collective will and collective intelligence to overcome the livelihood crisis, and immediately come together to deliberate."
