[Asia Economy Reporter Koo Chae-eun] Seo Nan-yi, a member of the Democratic Party's Emergency Committee, stated on the 4th, "We need to stop political disputes on SNS and meet at the grassroots level to establish measures against heatwave damage." She also emphasized that as the heatwave is expected to start early, measures for outdoor workers and the elderly must be prioritized.
In her opening remarks at the Emergency Committee meeting that day, Seo said, "The Democratic Party has declared itself a competent and humble party for the people's livelihood. Declarations are proven through practice and completed through systems."
She added, "I believe overcoming the deep-rooted political distrust throughout our society depends on politics. We need to stop political disputes on SNS and meet with the public at the grassroots level, from the opening of the National Assembly to price stabilization."
Seo noted, "After the heavy rain, a full-scale heatwave is forecasted, and the first heat-related death of the year has occurred in Gyeongnam. Considering that heat-related illnesses started 18 days earlier, measures for outdoor workers and the elderly need to be reviewed."
She also criticized, "With the increase in electricity and gas prices, vulnerable groups are appealing, and shopping has become frightening due to rising prices, but government measures are complacent." She added that since major elections have been held consecutively, livelihood issues should come first, urging lawmakers to come to the National Assembly and discuss these issues.
Seo stated, "Regarding the various pledges announced during the presidential and local elections, we should do what can be done now." About the Democratic Party's role, she said, "Do not postpone promises to the people just because we are the opposition. We must transparently fulfill our commitments," mentioning that there are things that can be done locally, such as supporting student loan assistance, expanding public postpartum care centers, transitioning the public sector to electric vehicles, and gradually shifting public transportation.
