[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] U.S. Senator Tim Kaine (Virginia) of the Democratic Party has urged President Joe Biden to immediately lift tariffs on China, Bloomberg reported on the 3rd (local time).
In a signed column published on the 2nd in Virginia's Daily Express Online, Senator Kaine argued that tariffs on China increase inflationary pressures and called for their removal.
He stated, "The tariffs on China were neither properly discussed nor properly implemented," adding, "They have not changed China's unfair trade practices and have only taken dollars out of the pockets of Americans."
Kaine said, "Tariffs on China are a direct tax imposed on American households and importers," and argued, "If these taxes are removed, the costs for American consumers will decrease, and manufacturers relying on imported parts will be more competitive in the global market."
He emphasized that President Biden should pursue broad solutions to calm U.S. inflation and immediately lift tariffs on China.
President Biden had stated last month during his vacation that he would consider lifting tariffs on China. At that time, President Biden said he would soon speak with Chinese President Xi Jinping and would review the issue of tariffs on China.
