Jeju Police Special Crackdown on Drunk Driving Results in Total of 318 Arrests

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Hwang Jeongpil] Jeju Police Agency announced on the 3rd that a total of 318 people were caught during a special crackdown on drunk driving conducted over two months from May to June.

Among them, 126 had their licenses suspended, and 192 had their licenses revoked.

This amounts to an average of 5.2 cases per day, representing a 10.4% increase compared to the same period last year.

This crackdown was proactively implemented due to concerns that outdoor activities and various gatherings would increase with the lifting of social distancing (April 18) and the start of the peak holiday season, leading to more drinking occasions and an increase in drunk driving.

The police conducted the crackdown using a "spot mobile" approach, frequently changing the times and locations of enforcement in downtown entertainment districts, major roadsides, and key holiday spots.

More than 300 traffic accidents caused by drunk driving occur annually, with the number of fatalities steadily increasing over the past four years.

In particular, since the lifting of social distancing measures, the number of deaths has doubled compared to the previous year (from 0 to 3).

According to data from the past five years, fatal accidents caused by drunk driving mostly occurred between 6 p.m. and 4 a.m. (86.2%).

A police official stated, "Drunk driving is a serious crime that can instantly take away not only one's own precious life, property, and happiness but also those of others. It is a time bomb that can lead to major accidents anytime and anywhere," and urged, "Even if you have one drink, never get behind the wheel."
