Dead Cross Also Seen During NATO Meeting According to a survey conducted by polling firm Research View from the 28th to the 30th of last month on President Yoon's job performance, 51% responded that he is "doing poorly," surpassing the positive evaluation of 46%. [Asia Economy Reporter Han Jinju] In a public opinion poll conducted during the time President Yoon Suk-yeol participated in the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, negative evaluations of his administration outpaced positive evaluations.


On the 3rd, the polling firm Research View surveyed 1,000 men and women nationwide aged 18 and older from May 28 to 30 regarding President Yoon's job performance. The results showed that 51% responded that he was "doing poorly," while 45% said he was "doing well." This survey was conducted among 1,000 men and women aged 18 and older nationwide.


Negative evaluations led positive evaluations by a margin of 6 percentage points, which is within the margin of error. According to Research View's criteria, this marks the first time in about 50 days since his inauguration that approval ratings have reversed, resulting in a dead cross.


Earlier polls by Realmeter (May 20?24) and the Korean Social Opinion Institute (KSOI, May 24?25) also showed dead cross results.


In Research View's regular surveys, former President Moon Jae-in experienced his first dead cross 20 months after his inauguration in December 2018 (positive 46%, negative 51%).


In this survey, the positive response rate for President Yoon's job performance was lower than his presidential vote share (48.6%) and decreased by 8 percentage points compared to Research View's previous survey (May 28?30), while the negative response rate increased by 11 percentage points. Specifically, those who responded "very well" dropped from 35% to 29%, and those who responded "very poorly" rose from 31% to 43%.


Negative evaluations were particularly prominent among people in their 50s and centrists. For those in their 50s, positive evaluations fell by 18 percentage points to 38%, while negative evaluations rose by 22 percentage points to 61%. Among centrists, negative evaluations increased by 21 percentage points to 58%, and positive evaluations decreased by 11 percentage points to 31%.


Regionally, negative evaluations were high in Gyeonggi-Incheon, Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam, and Gangwon-Jeju. In the Gyeonggi-Incheon area, negative evaluations were 53% (up 19 percentage points), Busan-Ulsan-Gyeongnam had 47% negative (up 16 percentage points), and Gangwon-Jeju had 51% negative (up 15 percentage points). Positive evaluations were 44% (down 15 percentage points), 48% (down 13 percentage points), and 41% (down 15 percentage points), respectively.

Party support was recorded at 45% for the People Power Party and 39% for the Democratic Party. The People Power Party led the Democratic Party by 6 percentage points, which is within the margin of error. The Justice Party's support rate was 4%. Compared to the previous survey, the People Power Party dropped by 2 percentage points, the Democratic Party by 1 percentage point, and the Justice Party rose by 1 percentage point.


The margin of error for this survey is ±3.1 percentage points at a 95% confidence level. It was conducted via an ARS automated response system targeting 1,000 mobile phone subscribers, with a response rate of 4.8%.
