[Asia Economy Reporter Park Byung-hee] Major foreign media reported on the 2nd that Tesla Motors' second-quarter deliveries this year decreased by 17.9% compared to the first quarter due to production disruptions caused by China's COVID-19 lockdown measures.
The number of electric vehicles delivered to customers by Tesla during the second quarter was 254,695 units, a decrease of 55,353 units compared to the first quarter deliveries (310,048 units).
The second-quarter delivery performance fell short of Wall Street analysts' estimates compiled by financial information firm Refinitiv, which projected 295,078 units.
However, it delivered more vehicles than in the second quarter of last year (201,250 units).
In a statement released that day, Tesla said it produced the highest number of electric vehicles ever on a monthly basis in June, but faced difficulties in vehicle deliveries due to the Shanghai factory shutdown and supply chain issues, variables beyond the company's control.
Earlier, CEO Elon Musk repeatedly warned that the second quarter would be very challenging, citing disruptions at the Shanghai factory, recession concerns, and inflationary pressures. Last month, he likened the factories in Austin, Texas, and Berlin, Germany, which started operations earlier this year, to "giant furnaces burning money," reporting losses of billions of dollars.
Tesla is scheduled to announce its second-quarter earnings after the New York Stock Exchange closes on the 20th.
