“Major Queen” Jeon In-ji (28, KB Financial Group, photo) returned home triumphantly on the 2nd. She secured her 4th career victory after a long 3 years and 8 months since the KEB Hana Bank Championship in October 2018 by winning the third major of the 2022 LPGA Tour season, the KPMG Women’s PGA Championship, held last month on the 27th at Congressional Golf Club in Bethesda, Maryland, USA. She smiled brightly and thanked the fan club members who came to greet her at Incheon Airport for their passionate support.
She shared, “Just before the tournament, I read an article about US Open champion Matt Fitzpatrick, who stayed in the same lodging and gained good energy by reading his golf journal when he won an amateur tournament on the same course nine years ago.” She added, “I also composed myself and engraved the mental notes I had written over time in my heart.” She continued, “Especially, right before the tournament, my coach pointed out that my shots lacked soul and that I couldn’t achieve a winning score like that. It was a big shock, but it became motivation to give my best on every shot.”
It is interesting that 3 of Jeon In-ji’s 4 career wins are majors: the 2015 US Women’s Open in July, the 2016 Evian Championship in September, and this recent tournament. She is close to achieving the ‘Career Grand Slam,’ which means winning all four different major championships. The LPGA Tour elevated the Evian Championship to major status in 2013, making a total of five majors, and winning four of these is recognized as a ‘Career Grand Slam.’ The upcoming AIG Women’s Open in Scotland this August awaits her challenge.
If she sweeps all five majors including the Chevron Championship next April, she will achieve the ‘Career Super Slam.’ Currently, the only Korean player to have achieved the ‘Career Grand Slam’ is the “Golf Empress” Park In-bi (34), who also added a gold medal from the 2016 Rio Olympics to become a ‘Career Golden Slam.’ Jeon In-ji expressed her determination, saying, “If I win another major this year, I would be so happy that words cannot express it. I will do everything I can at the AIG Women’s Open.”
