Outstanding Ideas as City Policy... Emphasizing "Walking with the Vulnerable" and Choosing Among Three Themes in Mayor Oh Se-hoon's Inaugural Speech
[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] A new style of policy contest is being held where young people, who are more familiar with videos than text, propose Seoul city youth policy ideas from their perspective in short videos within 59 seconds, called 'short-form'. Selected outstanding ideas will be adopted as actual Seoul city policies.
On the 3rd, Seoul City announced that it will hold the '2022 Seoul Youth Policy Contest "I am the Youth Mayor of Seoul"' to reflect the perspectives of young people in city administration and diversify channels for youth policy participation. Participants will be recruited for two weeks from the 11th to the 22nd, and any youth nationwide aged 19 to 39 can participate.
The contest themes are threefold: accompanying the vulnerable, emphasized by Mayor Oh Se-hoon in his inauguration speech on the 1st, strengthening future capabilities, and policies that are felt in daily life. Youth wishing to participate can choose one theme and explain their idea in a video (short-form) within 59 seconds and submit it. After selecting 30 teams from all applicants (teams) who submitted short-form videos to advance to the next stage, the main competition to select outstanding ideas will be held. The main competition proceeds in the order of the ‘PT Round’, where proposals are presented, the ‘Debating Round’, where three teams per theme debate, and the ‘Final Round’, where the proposed policies are showcased in front of citizens.
Each of the 30 teams advancing to the finals will receive 500,000 KRW research project funding each time they advance a round. The final winning team will be awarded a prize of 10 million KRW and a certificate, and will have the opportunity to participate as a ‘Special Advisor for Seoul Youth Policy’ in reviewing and advising on Seoul city youth policies. The team leader of the final winning team will be recommended as the Seoul City Youth Honorary Mayor.
The ideas of the three teams advancing to the finals will undergo deepening and development processes and are expected to be realized as actual policies through Seoul City in the future. Applications and video submissions can be made on the ‘2022 Seoul Youth Policy Contest’ website. Detailed information can be found on the contest website or the Youth Mongttang Information Center.
Meanwhile, outstanding proposals awarded at the '2021 Seoul Youth Policy Grand Debate' held by the Seoul Institute last year are currently being promoted as actual policies after expert deepening and development processes and review by the relevant Seoul city departments. Kim Cheol-hee, head of the Seoul City Future Youth Planning Group, said, “This Seoul Youth Policy Contest was prepared to expand new participation channels to create a ‘Youth Seoul’,” and added, “We hope young people will propose various policy ideas found in daily life without reservation, thinking of themselves as the mayor of Seoul.”
