Gangnam District Mayor Jo Seong-myeong Presents Four-Year Administrative Direction for Gangnam's Rebound with the Vision of 'Green Smart City Gangnam'
[Asia Economy Reporter Jong-il Park] The inauguration ceremony of Jo Seong-myeong, the 8th elected mayor of Gangnam District, was held at 3 p.m. on the 1st at the COEX Auditorium in Samseong-dong.
Mayor Jo Seong-myeong of Gangnam presented the direction of district administration for the next four years for Gangnam's re-leap with the vision of a ‘Green Smart City Gangnam.’
About 1,200 people attended the inauguration ceremony, including members of the National Assembly, city and district council members, heads of related organizations, group leaders, and senior citizens, people with disabilities, and volunteers.
Mayor Jo Seong-myeong said, “We will revive the economy, increase value, and steadily prepare for Gangnam’s future,” adding, “As the 8th elected mayor of Gangnam District, I will fulfill this heavy responsibility without failing expectations and achieve a ‘new Gangnam re-leap.’”
Inaugural Address
Dear beloved and respected residents of Gangnam District!
I am Jo Seong-myeong, the 8th elected mayor of Gangnam District, who will open a beautiful future of Gangnam together with you.
First, I deeply thank the great residents of Gangnam District who entrusted me with the important position of mayor.
Respected residents of Gangnam District!
Gangnam has been the place where I have lived with my family for 50 years.
Our great residents of Gangnam have contributed the most to the development of the Republic of Korea,
practiced sacrifice and service,
and are the warmest people, which I know better than anyone else.
Together with the great residents of Gangnam,
I will do my best to make Gangnam the ‘world’s best city.’
Warm residents of Gangnam who think of neighbors before themselves!
First, I will “revive the economy and increase value”
and steadily prepare for Gangnam’s future.
The Yeongdong-daero complex transfer center has entered the early stage of construction.
A large park will be built on the surface of Yeongdong-daero,
and a large-scale underground city with an area 30 times that of Jamsil Sports Complex
will be created in the underground space.
Seven lines including GTX-A and C lines, Wirye~Sinsa Line, and Samsung~Dongtan express metropolitan railroad
will pass through,
and a large-scale development project enabling the use of high-speed rail is also underway.
We will actively support the creation of the ‘International Exchange Complex District,’
which will become the center of Korea’s MICE industry in the future,
and through dialogue, we will do our best to make Hyundai Motor’s headquarters a landmark not only of Gangnam but also of Seoul.
Also, we will build a world-class ‘Administrative and Cultural Complex Town.’
It will be a space full of culture as well as administrative work,
and we will create an open space that breathes and communicates with residents
by gathering the will of the residents.
Second, I will do my best for “economic revitalization.”
By abolishing corporate regulations and strengthening cooperation and support,
we will create an atmosphere where “Gangnam District and companies work together.”
We will take the lead in attracting innovative global companies and creating jobs,
revitalize the local economy,
and establish a medical tourism cluster
to promptly resume medical tourism, which was stagnant due to COVID-19.
Third, I will create a
“Green Smart City Gangnam” where nature and innovative technology coexist.
We will build smart trails to ‘make the city center natural’
within the city.
Also, we will connect the Han River, Yangjaecheon, Tancheon, and Segokcheon to create an environment where residents can walk together and enjoy leisure.
Furthermore, to prepare for the Fourth Industrial Revolution era, we will make the Suseo and Segok areas
the center where robots and artificial intelligence are realized.
Fourth, I will do my best for Gangnam’s re-leap.
Starting with reconstruction, which had been slow due to various regulations,
we will accelerate the pace for Gangnam’s re-leap.
We will promptly promote the reconstruction of aging apartments in Apgujeong, Daechi, Gaepo, and other areas,
and implement urban heightening policies through zoning upgrades in unreasonable residential areas.
To this end, we will form a rapid integrated promotion T/F team involving residents, experts, and the district office,
and through close cooperation with related organizations such as Seoul City and the central government,
we will actively seek measures to proceed quickly in the direction desired by Gangnam residents.
Fifth, I will make Gangnam a “comfortable city to live in.”
I will take the lead in preventing various disasters, accidents, and crimes so that residents can enjoy a safe life.
Also, we will expand insufficient living welfare infrastructure such as cultural, sports, and parking facilities,
and create a pleasant environment by improving traffic conditions, urban aesthetics, and night scenery,
to realize a more comfortable and happy Gangnam for residents.
Lastly,
I will create a Gangnam that embraces and walks together with all social classes.
We will actively discover and support various social welfare and cultural policies that cover children, youth, newlyweds, people with disabilities, and seniors.
Also, to become a truly top education district,
we will distribute more high-quality education-related programs to schools at all levels,
and devote efforts to improving school environments and diversifying programs, such as creating study cafe-type learning spaces.
Respected residents of Gangnam District!
Our Gangnam is the heart of the great Republic of Korea.
That pride and energy have made today’s Gangnam,
and Gangnam will become an even richer and more honorable city in the future.
I will be with you on that path.
The position of mayor of Gangnam District that you have given me
is the position of all residents.
From now on, I will listen to the voices of residents
and find the best policies and wise answers on the ground.
During the next four years of my term, I will fulfill this heavy responsibility entrusted to me
without failing your expectations.
Please trust and watch over me.
