[Asia Economy Reporter Lee Jung-yoon] The National Human Rights Commission announced on the 1st that it has been notified of the first soldier death case since the launch of the Military Human Rights Protection Officer.
On the morning of the same day, during the first Military Human Rights Protection Committee meeting held after the launch ceremony of the Military Human Rights Protection Officer, the Ministry of National Defense notified the National Human Rights Commission of the soldier's death in accordance with Article 50-6 of the National Human Rights Commission Act.
According to the newly established Article 50-6 in January, the Minister of National Defense must immediately notify the Human Rights Commission if a soldier dies while on duty. The Human Rights Commission may request the Military Human Rights Protection Officer and affiliated staff to be present during the military's investigation and inquiry into the case.
The Military Human Rights Protection Officer, launched on this day, is responsible for investigating human rights violations and discriminatory acts, carrying out corrective measures and policy recommendations to provide remedies. In cases where a soldier dies while on duty, the officer can receive notification from the Minister of National Defense to intervene early in the death case and visit military units for investigation.
Song Doo-hwan, Chairperson of the Human Rights Commission, stated, "We expect the Ministry of National Defense to clearly determine the cause of death and take appropriate measures accordingly," adding, "The Human Rights Commission plans to verify the scene of this death case and find ways to support the bereaved family."
