Daejeon City "Conditionally Allows Installation of Tables and Awnings on Pedestrian Streets in Shopping Districts"

[Asia Economy (Daejeon) Reporter Jeong Il-woong] It will become possible to install temporary facilities on pedestrian-only roads in areas densely packed with shops.

Daejeon City announced that starting from the 1st of this month, it will implement a road occupancy permit system for pedestrian-only roads within shopping districts.

The permit system is being implemented following a partial revision of the ‘Daejeon City Road Occupancy Permit and Occupancy Fee Collection Ordinance’ in February, aimed at supporting local small business owners and revitalizing the local economy.

The ordinance revision defines parts of pedestrian-only roads within ‘shopping districts’?areas where 30 or more wholesale stores, retail stores, or service stores are densely concentrated on streets or underground roads within 2,000㎡?as subject to road occupancy permits, and adds new objects eligible for occupancy permits, thereby encouraging commercial district revitalization.

Through this, it will be possible to install and operate objects such as tables and folding awnings on pedestrian-only roads in shopping districts after obtaining a road occupancy permit.

However, the installation and operation of such objects must ensure a minimum effective pedestrian passage width of 3 meters without obstructing pedestrian traffic, and road occupancy and facility installation are only allowed within 2.5 meters from the storefront.

Additionally, in principle, actions that obstruct pedestrian traffic are prohibited, facilities cannot be installed on the road after business hours, and the installation of permanent facilities is also restricted.

For detailed information regarding road occupancy applications and required documents, inquiries can be made to the construction departments of the respective district offices.

Han Seon-hee, Director of the Transportation and Construction Bureau of the city, stated, “Each district office will ensure that qualified small business owners can apply for and receive road occupancy permits and operate their businesses in the shortest possible time,” adding, “We hope this measure will help alleviate some of the economic difficulties faced by local small business owners.”
