Promotion of Smart Yongsan Network Backbone Advancement (Broadband Private Communication Network Installation Route)
[Asia Economy Reporter Park Jong-il] Yongsan-gu (District Mayor Park Hee-young) is promoting the ‘Smart Yongsan Network Backbone Advancement’ project to secure the basic infrastructure for a smart city.
The ‘Smart Yongsan Network Backbone Advancement’ project aims to expand the physical capacity of the district’s broadband private communication network in preparation for the increasing demand for network services and traffic surge due to the spread of intelligent smart cities.
The backbone connection route of the district’s private network connects the district office to 16 neighborhoods with a total length of 34.374 km of optical fiber cable, linking administrative networks and others. Currently, 88.9% of the physical capacity is in use, so through this network backbone advancement project, the district plans to significantly increase the spare capacity of the private network from the current 11.1% to 56.6%.
The total project cost is 1.2 billion KRW. The scale of work covers 24.816 km, which corresponds to 72% of the sections where the optical fiber private network is installed.
The work includes replacing the optical fiber cables laid in the sections (from 72-core to 144-core), installing optical connection boxes at cable joints, and verifying normal operation.
A district official explained, “With the full-scale promotion of the smart city, the demand for communication networks necessary for wired and wireless Wi-Fi, Internet of Things, etc., is expected to increase explosively,” adding, “Expanding the private network provides a foundation to offer public services at a low cost.”
The district announced the facility construction bid through the Public Procurement Service’s national comprehensive electronic procurement system and recruited contractors on June 29. The final contractor will be selected through qualification screening in July. The project is scheduled to be completed by the end of this year.
Park Hee-young, Mayor of Yongsan-gu, said, “2022 will be the inaugural year for promoting the district’s smart city creation,” and added, “We will complete the communication network necessary for Yongsan, which is on the verge of regional development, to leap into a world-class smart city within this year.”
Gangbuk-gu (District Mayor Lee Soon-hee) is seeking candidates for the ‘2022 Gangbuk Citizen Award,’ which is given to exemplary residents who have greatly contributed to the development of the local community.
The award categories include ▲Volunteer Service ▲Model Family ▲Culture and Arts ▲Sports ▲Exemplary Entrepreneur ▲Social Welfare ▲Environment, totaling seven categories. The district is accepting nominations for award candidates in each category from July 1 to August 31.
Nominees must have resided in Gangbuk-gu for at least five years as of the announcement date, July 1, and must have contributed to community harmony and social development in the relevant field. However, candidates in the exemplary entrepreneur category must operate a business located in the district, and candidates in the social welfare category must be engaged in welfare work.
To recommend a candidate, submit the required documents to the community service center of the neighborhood where the candidate resides. Additionally, there must be at least 10 joint recommenders when nominating a candidate. The nomination form, achievement report, and other required documents can be found on the Gangbuk-gu website.
Besides residents, heads of community service centers, police station chiefs, school principals, and officials at the level of director or higher in Gangbuk-gu can also recommend candidates.

The district will select awardees through internal review and announce the winners in October. The names, photos, and major achievements of the awardees will be posted on the ‘Proud Gangbuk Citizens’ section of the Gangbuk-gu website, allowing anyone to view them.

Gwangjin-gu is operating a ‘Resource Circulation Activist Training Course’ for 30 residents to realize carbon neutrality through resource circulation.
The resource circulation activist training course is one of the 2022 public-private cooperation projects titled ‘Making Gwangjin Clean through Resource Circulation Activities,’ planned for joint practice by the district and residents.
This course will be held for 30 participants from August 22 to September 2, with 2 hours per weekday for a total of 10 sessions, and participation is free of charge.
The program consists of systematic theoretical classes such as ‘Understanding Gwangjin-gu Resource Circulation’ and ‘Garbage A to Z with the Garbage Doctor,’ as well as field practice like ‘On-site Exploration of Resource Circulation Collection Facilities’ to enhance interest and immersion.
In particular, the course is designed to help graduates continue sustainable activities as resource circulation activists and to enable them to serve as instructors after completion, contributing to expanding residents’ opportunities for social participation through professional workforce development.
Gwangjin-gu residents interested in resource circulation education activities can apply via QR code or by phone. For detailed information on application and curriculum, contact the project manager.
In this regard, Gwangjin-gu is operating various programs that anyone can practice resource circulation activities in daily life, including ‘Resource Circulation Activist Training Program,’ ‘Plogging for Resource Circulation,’ and ‘Coffee Grounds Recycling Project’ as part of the 2022 public-private cooperation project ‘Making Gwangjin Clean through Resource Circulation Activities’ involving resident participation.
