Prime Minister Trudeau: "The International Community Must Respond to North Korea's Goal of Complete, Verifiable, and Irreversible Denuclearization"
President Yoon Suk-yeol, who visited Madrid, Spain to attend the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, held a summit meeting with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau on the morning of the 30th (local time) at the IFEMA Convention Center.
(Madrid, Spain = Asia Economy Reporter Baek Kyunghwan) On the 30th (local time), during the last day of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summit, President Yoon Suk-yeol met with Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau to discuss cooperation on issues including North Korea's nuclear problem and supply chain sectors.
On this day, the two leaders began their meeting in the morning by discussing the recently established Gapyeong Battle Victory Monument in Canada. Prime Minister Trudeau stated, "I fully agree with a future-oriented bilateral relationship," and explained, "Canada's newly announced Indo-Pacific strategy also prioritizes close relations with regional partner countries like South Korea."
Regarding the North Korean nuclear issue, the two countries agreed to promote close cooperation. President Yoon reaffirmed the South Korean government's stance of keeping the door open for dialogue while responding firmly to North Korea's provocations. He also mentioned that the two countries should closely cooperate to maintain unity in the international community.
In response, Prime Minister Trudeau said that the international community must respond with the goal of North Korea's complete, verifiable, and irreversible denuclearization. He also expressed support for the South Korean government's efforts on the North Korean nuclear issue.
Cooperation in the supply chain sector was also discussed. The two leaders agreed to further expand and deepen cooperation between the two countries focusing on future industries such as advanced technology, artificial intelligence, and low-carbon energy, and to concretize cooperation in supply chains of key minerals such as lithium, nickel, and cobalt.
Additionally, President Yoon emphasized that Russia's illegal invasion related to the Ukraine issue can never be justified. President Yoon explained, "We will provide the humanitarian aid that Ukraine needs for its reconstruction and restoration of peace." Prime Minister Trudeau also evaluated the South Korean government's consistent stance and support for Ukraine as very important and responded that Canada will spare no necessary support until Ukraine's sovereignty is fully restored and peace is reestablished.
