[Exclusive] Seoul Metropolitan Council Opens on July 4... Election of Speaker and Deputy Speaker for the 11th Council's First Half Term

[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] The Seoul Metropolitan Council will convene at 2 p.m. on July 4 to elect the chairperson and vice chairpersons for the first half of the 11th council.

Choi Hojung, floor leader of the People Power Party in the Seoul Metropolitan Council, and Jeong Jinsul, floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, announced an agreement on the organization of the 11th Seoul Metropolitan Council on the afternoon of the 30th.

The chairperson is expected to be Kim Hyunki (4-term) from the People Power Party, and the vice chairpersons are expected to be Nam Changjin (2-term, People Power Party) and Woo Hyeongchan (3-term, Democratic Party of Korea).

Regarding the allocation of the 11 standing committees and the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts, the People Power Party will take the chairmanship of the Operations, Administration and Autonomy, Planning and Economy, Culture, Sports and Tourism, Health and Welfare, the provisional Urban Housing, provisional Urban Management, and Transportation Committees.

The Democratic Party of Korea will take the chairmanship of the Environment and Water Resources, Urban Safety and Construction, and Education Committees.

Additionally, it was agreed that the chairmanship of the Special Committee on Budget and Accounts will be held by the People Power Party in the 1st, 3rd, and 4th years, and by the Democratic Party of Korea in the 2nd year.

Kim Hyunki, the nominated chairperson from the People Power Party, and floor leader Choi Hojung are evaluated to have reached a smooth compromise through negotiations with Woo Hyeongchan, the nominated vice chairperson from the Democratic Party of Korea, and floor leader Jeong Jinsul.
