Gyeonggi-do Supports 'Animal Registration' Fees... Intensive Crackdown After Voluntary Reporting Period [Gyeonggi-do]

[Asia Economy Reporter Ra Young-cheol] Gyeonggi Province is encouraging voluntary animal registration reporting until August and is promoting intensive crackdowns and support for animal registration costs.

The 'Animal Registration System' is a currently implemented system under the Animal Protection Act to protect animals and prevent loss and abandonment.

Dogs aged two months or older kept for companion purposes in houses, quasi-houses, or other places must be registered with the local government.

During the voluntary reporting period (July 1 to August 31), if you apply for animal registration at designated registration agencies such as animal hospitals in the province, the competent local government will issue an animal registration certificate to the owner after approval procedures.

If the owner's address or contact information has changed, you can apply for changes through the online Animal Protection Management System. If the owner has changed, you must visit the local government or registration agency in person to report it.

From September 1, after the reporting period, for one month, inspections will focus on parks and walking trails frequently visited by companion dogs to check animal registration status, whether identification tags are worn, and whether leash length is maintained within 2 meters.

If you fail to register the target animal or report changes during the voluntary reporting period, a fine of up to 600,000 KRW will be imposed.

The province plans to support the cost of implantable radio-frequency identification devices for up to 30,000 animals on a first-come, first-served basis this year in cooperation with each city and county. At cooperative animal hospitals in each city and county, owners can register animals using the implantable method by paying only 10,000 KRW out of pocket.

Park Kyung-ae, head of the Animal Protection Division, urged, "Animal registration is not optional but a legal obligation for dog owners. To establish a culture of responsible pet care, residents who have not registered their animals must participate in registration."
