Suncheon Mayor Transition Committee Proposes Direction for 'Korea's Leading Ecological Capital, Suncheon'

[Suncheon=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Hyung-kwon] On the day before the launch of the 8th term of the elected government, the Suncheon Mayor Transition Committee disclosed its activities so far on the 30th at the transition office.

The transition committee, from the 7th to the 30th, for 24 days, divided into four subcommittees, received reports on departmental pending tasks, and reviewed the feasibility of campaign promises announced during the election period with experts, organizing them into 42 detailed pledges across 11 fields.

The vision and goal of the 8th term Suncheon city government were set as “Korea’s Ecological Capital, First-class Suncheon,” and the administrative policy was established as “Dignified Citizens, Trusted Administration, Creative City.”

“First-class Suncheon” refers to a creative city that presents the standards and direction for the future city, where Suncheon citizens themselves can live with high pride.

During the election period, the successful hosting of the 2023 International Garden Expo, the revitalization of Suncheon’s economy through carbon neutrality, young people earning over a hundred million won commuting to rural areas, and the restoration of the old downtown with its nostalgic atmosphere were concretized through discussions with experts.

Additionally, by analyzing citizens’ demands and collecting diverse opinions, 15 new pledges were proposed, including the abolition of empty formalities, creating a water city in Yeonhyangdeul, promoting life-centered care services, and establishing an eco-artist center.

The transition committee focused on building a foundation to serve as the central city of the South Coast Southern Zone Megacity and pledges that can instill pride as citizens of first-class Suncheon.

Furthermore, to ensure smooth administration during the 8th term, 12 issues requiring policy changes or deemed unreasonable were identified and delivered as policy proposals to Mayor-elect Noh Gwan-gyu of Suncheon.

The main recommendations included strengthening appropriateness and permits due to indiscriminate apartment complex approvals damaging natural landscapes, efficient operation of organization and personnel, avoiding populist and one-off budget allocations, enhancing the expertise of various committees, refraining from attending external events to focus on core duties, resolving civil complaints during public officials’ lunch breaks, and persistently proceeding with the installation of various disliked facilities.

Chairman Kim Do-hyung said, “Through this transition committee’s activities, each member has refined the pledges and created policy proposals with a sincere desire to support Mayor Noh Gwan-gyu in making Korea’s ecological capital, first-class Suncheon,” and added, “We ask for much support so that the 8th term Suncheon city government can successfully launch.”
