[Asia Economy Reporter Park Sun-mi] Samsung Engineering is officially entering the Southeast Asian water market by acquiring shares in a Vietnamese water treatment company.

On the 30th, Samsung Engineering announced that it had signed a contract to acquire a 24% stake in the Vietnamese water treatment company DNP Water for approximately 52.7 billion KRW (41 million USD). Following this acquisition, the shareholding structure of DNP Water will be 24% Samsung Engineering, 53% DNP Holdings, and 23% others.

DNP Water is a company specializing in water supply projects in Vietnam and is the largest water treatment company among Vietnamese private enterprises. Samsung Engineering plans to use Vietnam as a strategic base for the Southeast Asian water treatment market and aggressively pursue growth.

Samsung Engineering expects that the company’s extensive EPC experience and global technological capabilities in water treatment, combined with DNP Water’s experience and network in Vietnam’s water supply business, will create synergy for future projects.

Given that Vietnam’s water and sewage projects are operated publicly, Samsung Engineering has previously entered the industrial wastewater market. With this share acquisition, the company can expand its business scope to all areas of environmental business, including water supply and sewage. Samsung Engineering plans to jointly participate in the water supply and operation projects secured by DNP Water in Vietnam to accumulate experience and strengthen its position in the Vietnamese market. Furthermore, based on this regional competitiveness, the company aims to expand its business into the sewage sector in Vietnam and eventually extend its successful model in Vietnam to neighboring Southeast Asian countries.

A Samsung Engineering official stated, “Following the recent global ESG trend, environmental business has become one of the company’s future growth engines,” adding, “We plan to successfully carry out environmental projects in Vietnam and accelerate our entry into overseas environmental markets such as Southeast Asia.”
