Jeong Muchang Elected as the Democratic Party's 9th Candidate for Gwangju City Council Chairman

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] Jeong Muchang, a member of the Gwangju Metropolitan City Council representing Wolgok 1·2, Unnam, Usan, and Sinheung-dong, has been elected as the candidate for the 9th Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Council Chairperson.


On the 30th, at the Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party office, Jeong was selected as the sole candidate, defeating Assemblyman Jo Seokho in the Democratic Party chairperson candidate primary election.


Jeong entered the 8th Gwangju City Council in 2018. He served as the Chairperson of the Council Operations Committee and as a member of the Green New Deal Special Committee.


He has also served as co-representative of the Chamjoeun Gwangsan Forum, publicity chairman of the Gwangsan-gu Peace Statue Citizen Group, director of the Korea Human Rights Education Institute, director of the Gwangju Migrant Health Center, and medical officer of the Gwangsan-gu Sports Council. Currently, he is the vice chairman of the Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party.


In his policy presentation prior to the primary, Jeong said, “The newly starting 9th council is a very important period to reorganize and strengthen the functions and roles of the council to support active legislative activities,” adding, “We must show a renewed image through change and innovation that gives citizens the belief that there are 23 council members who exist for the citizens and are always with them.”


He emphasized ▲ a livelihood council that prioritizes and practices citizens' lives and daily living ▲ an open council that communicates with citizens ▲ a cooperative governance council working with civil society and experts ▲ a working council that studies, researches, and proposes alternatives.


Meanwhile, the Gwangju City Council will hold the 308th extraordinary session on the 11th of next month to elect the chairperson and vice chairperson and begin full-scale legislative activities.
