[Asia Economy Reporter Jeong Hyunjin] Gina Raimondo, U.S. Secretary of Commerce, stated that global semiconductor exports to Russia have decreased by 90% due to sanctions imposed after the airstrikes in Ukraine, and she pressured that Chinese semiconductor companies will not be tolerated if they supply semiconductors to Russia.
According to major foreign media on the 29th (local time), Secretary Raimondo made these remarks at a Commerce Department-hosted conference. She added that controls on the aerospace sector due to sanctions are also impacting Russia's revenue and its ability to support military aviation.
Secretary Raimondo's comments came just one day after the Biden administration added five Chinese companies reportedly supporting Russia's military and defense industry to the trade blacklist. She explained, "Export restrictions are at the core of the best way to protect democracy. They are more important than ever," and added, "Unfortunately, I believe this will not end in the short term, so it must be carried out over a sustained period."
The U.S. is monitoring whether China is complying with U.S. and European sanctions against Russia. Secretary Raimondo emphasized, "What if SMIC or other Chinese semiconductor companies are found to be supplying semiconductors to Russia?" and stated, "We will 'shutdown' them, and we can. If necessary, we intend to fulfill that promise."
