[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon will visit the Donui-dong jjokbang village on the 29th. He plans to check on the safety of the jjokbang residents who are enduring a difficult summer amid the monsoon and heatwave, and to review heatwave countermeasures.

The Donui-dong jjokbang village consists of 730 jjokbang rooms across 84 buildings. As of June 2022, 501 residents live there, and about 33% (167 people) of the residents are elderly living alone aged 65 or older.

Mayor Oh will visit the heatwave shelter inside the Donui-dong jjokbang counseling center to inspect the facilities. The heatwave shelter is an indoor space equipped with air conditioning where vulnerable groups such as elderly people exhausted by the heatwave can rest. He will also inspect convenience facilities for jjokbang residents, such as the bathhouse and laundry room. He will have a conversation session with residents participating in the vocational self-support program at the counseling center. Afterwards, Mayor Oh will visit elderly households living in the Donui-dong jjokbang village to check the status of air conditioner installations and listen to the residents' difficulties.

The Seoul Metropolitan Government is operating heatwave protection measures for jjokbang village residents. Each counseling center forms patrol teams to support resident evacuation during heatwaves, report and take emergency measures in case of emergency patients, and conduct safety inspections of hazardous facilities during heavy rain. Heatwave shelters for residents of major jjokbang villages such as Seoul Station, Namdaemun, and Yeongdeungpo will be increased from the existing 8 locations (June to September) by adding 6 more locations (July to August), operating a total of 14 shelters.

Additionally, on the same day, Mayor Oh will hold a farewell ceremony for Administrative Deputy Mayor Jo In-dong and Administrative Deputy Mayor Ryu Hoon at the Seoul City Hall multipurpose hall. The two deputy mayors were appointed in May last year and served together for about a year.

Mayor Oh plans to present plaques of appreciation and deliver words of encouragement to the two deputy mayors who are stepping down after doing their best for Seoul citizens. About 150 Seoul city executives and staff will attend the farewell ceremony.
