Gangjin-gun Selected for 2023 General Rural Agricultural and Fishery Village Development Contest

[Gangjin=Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Yong-su] Gangjin-gun, Jeollanam-do announced on the 28th that it has been finally selected for the ‘2023 General Agricultural and Fishing Village Development Project for Happy Living Spaces’ organized by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries, securing a total project cost of 7.8 billion KRW.

The ‘General Agricultural and Fishing Village Development Project in the Fishing Village Sector’ is a project carried out over five years from 2023 by the government and local governments to revitalize fishing villages facing issues such as aging population and population decline. It is divided into three areas: creating happy living spaces, multi-value workplaces, and strengthening city/county capabilities.

Starting with the preliminary plan establishment earlier this year, Gangjin-gun formed a promotion committee centered on residents of Sinjeon and held several meetings. All residents of three villages prepared for on-site evaluations by improving village halls and alleys.

In addition, the promotion committee visited related organizations such as Jeollanam-do and the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to provide prior project explanations. The county and residents worked together to select the target site, with active support from the local member of the National Assembly.

As a result, Gangjin-gun was finally selected in the ‘Creating Happy Living Spaces’ category along with nine fishing villages including Sinnam Village in Samcheok-si, Gangwon Province, and Taean-gun, Chungcheongnam-do, securing a total project cost of 7.8 billion KRW (70% national funds, 30% county funds).

With the secured project funds, the county plans to implement various projects to improve the quality of life and expand income bases for fishing village residents in the Sinjeon-myeon area by 2027, including ▲restoration of Beoljeong reed wetland rest area ▲construction of Songcheon and Sacheo Harmony Centers ▲creation of safe distances on the front road of Sacheo ▲maintenance of Sacheo fences and roofs.

Kim Seong-gi, chairman of the promotion committee, said, "With this year’s selection for the General Agricultural and Fishing Village Development Project, we will improve the income and basic living standards of fishing village residents and enhance residential conditions through planned development of fishing villages.” He added, “We will actively promote the project while communicating with residents.”
