[Asia Economy Reporter Hyunwoo Lee] German Chancellor Olaf Scholz warned that Russian President Vladimir Putin is trying to implement a strategy to divide the West and other regions, and cautioned against falling into such a 'trap.'
According to the British daily The Guardian on the 27th (local time), Chancellor Scholz said on the German public broadcaster ZDF, "The world must not fall into Putin's trap of splitting into the West and the rest," adding, "That (the division between the West and anti-West) is not true." He emphasized, "The world is more united in helping Ukraine than Russia perceives."
The Guardian reported that Scholz's remarks were intended to counter Putin's moves to rally anti-Western forces in response to the Western solidarity against Russia. Russia and China are analyzed to be aiming to consolidate anti-Western forces by holding BRICS summits and announcing plans to expand membership in opposition to the Group of Seven (G7) meetings and the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) summits held in succession.
This G7 summit also consciously invited leaders from non-Western regions such as South Africa, India, Argentina, Senegal, and Indonesia. The Guardian pointed out that the intention was to prevent the G7 summit from being seen as a "club of rich countries" solely focused on the Ukraine war.
