Progressive Party to Elect Next Leadership on the 22nd of Next Month

[Asia Economy Reporter Oh Ju-yeon] The Progressive Party announced on the 28th that it has launched a nationwide simultaneous party officer election to elect the second-term new leadership.


The Progressive Party plans to elect key leadership positions through the nationwide simultaneous party officer election on the 22nd of next month, including the standing representative and three general representatives, five representatives of class and sector organizations (Labor Party, Nongmin Party, Women & Mama Party, Youth Progressive Party, Poor People's Party), chairpersons and vice-chairpersons of 16 metropolitan city and provincial party committees, central committee members, and delegates.


Candidate registration will take place from the 4th to the 5th of next month, followed by the official campaign period from the 6th to the 17th, and party member voting from the 18th to the 22nd. The term of office is two years.


The leadership to be elected this time will bear the responsibility of building on the Progressive Party's progress in the June 1 local elections to successfully enter the National Assembly in the 22nd general election scheduled for April 2024.


In the recent local elections, the Progressive Party produced 21 elected officials, including Kim Jong-hoon, Mayor of Dong-gu, Ulsan, laying the foundation for a leap forward.


The number of eligible voting party members has increased by over 10,000 from 30,722 in the first party officer election to 42,460.


The Progressive Party currently has about 87,000 members, two-thirds of whom are irregular workers and laborers receiving minimum wage, making it a labor-centered progressive party.


The Progressive Party emphasized regarding the next leadership to be elected, "In addition to the COVID-19 pandemic, there is a responsibility to respond to the economic crisis faced by ordinary people due to continuous price surges and interest rate hikes, to protect the lives of workers and ordinary citizens, and to develop livelihood political activities that save people's lives."
