Kakao Executives Seek to Calm Angry Internal Sentiment... Emergency Meeting with Union Representatives

[Asia Economy Reporter Seungjin Lee] Kakao executives met with the labor union, which is in conflict over the sale of Kakao Mobility, to exchange opinions.

According to industry sources on the 28th, Kim Seongsu, head of Kakao Community Alignment Center (CAC), and Bae Jaehyun, Kakao Chief Investment Officer (CIO), held an emergency meeting with the union the day before.

On that day, Kakao executives reportedly said, "Nothing has been definitively decided regarding the mobility sale," and "We will continue to communicate."

It appears that both sides only confirmed each other's positions during the meeting. A Kakao official said, "The management and the union have started communication regarding the sale rumors," and "It showed the willingness to continue communication going forward."

A union representative said, "There is nothing to disclose to the public yet," and added, "We will announce if there are any changes in the situation."

This meeting was the first since the union announced collective actions such as a signature campaign opposing the sale of Kakao Mobility targeting Kakao affiliates' employees on the 24th.

The union began a signature campaign on the 27th opposing the sale of Kakao Mobility to a private equity fund and urging the fulfillment of social responsibilities. They plan to collect signatures from 15,000 employees across all Kakao affiliates and submit them.

The union also proposed a meeting with Kim Beom-su, Kakao’s founder and largest shareholder, and head of the Future Initiative Center.

Meanwhile, the union had planned to hold a press conference opposing the sale of Kakao Mobility to a private equity fund in front of Exit 1 of Pangyo Station in Seongnam City on the 28th but postponed the schedule. The union stated, "Due to rain and construction at the new Pangyo headquarters, the venue conditions were not suitable," and added, "We will share the rescheduled date once it is confirmed."
