Operation of Subtropical Demonstration Field for Experimental Cultivation of Subtropical Crops such as Pineapple, Apple Mango, Passion Fruit, and Dragon Fruit
[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters, Reporter Heo Seon-sik] Boseong-gun, Jeollanam-do, announced that it has been accelerating the cultivation of various new high-income subtropical crops such as apple mango, banana, pineapple, and passion fruit over the past five years.
Currently, Boseong-gun has subtropical complexes with 1.0 hectares of apple mango and 0.3 hectares of banana. In particular, the banana crop is expected to yield more than 40 tons this year through eco-friendly cultivation.
Due to abnormal climate caused by global warming, interest in subtropical crops is increasing, especially among young people including returnees to farming and rural areas, as well as farmers planning to switch to subtropical crops.
The county operates a subtropical demonstration field within the Agricultural Technology Center to cultivate various subtropical crops such as pineapple, apple mango, passion fruit, and dragon fruit, aiming to foster new high-income subtropical crops in response to climate change.
Additionally, through pilot projects for farmers, customized cultivation techniques suitable for the region are being established and disseminated, successfully establishing subtropical crops as a new source of income for farmers.
Boseong-grown bananas and apple mangoes are expected to begin harvesting at the end of July and be shipped in earnest in August. The price is forecasted to be 7,000 to 12,000 KRW/kg for bananas and 30,000 to 40,000 KRW/kg for apple mangoes.
Kwon Hyun-joo, director of the Boseong Agricultural Technology Center, said, “As there are continuous inquiries and great interest from farmers, we will continue to expand the cultivation area of subtropical crops including apple mangoes and strive to contribute not only to technology transfer but also to increasing farmers’ income.”
