[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Hye-sun] SK Telecom announced on the 28th that it has signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) with MCNIK, a company specializing in location-based services and intelligent transportation systems, to expand its traffic information generation and verification business using telecommunications big data.

SKT and MCNIK have been conducting ITS (Intelligent Transport System) projects utilizing telecommunications big data. This MOU was established to strengthen cooperation between the two companies and expand their business areas.

Going forward, SKT and MCNIK plan to jointly promote projects in various fields such as road and traffic information generation and verification, ITS, smart mobility, and smart cities by utilizing traffic and floating population information generated based on telecommunications big data.

Through the ITS innovative technology public contest project (Development of ITS innovative services based on high-precision communication data positioning technology) completed in April by the Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport, the two companies have already generated traffic volume data based on telecommunications big data for general national roads in the metropolitan area.

In this project, SKT applied location intelligence technology that uses AI to improve errors in base station radio wave data and convert it into high-precision location information, and utilized the generated data in the ITS innovative technology public contest project. After completing this project, SKT plans to continue investing and developing technology to expand the business into a nationwide real-time traffic volume service.

SKT expects that through the telecommunications big data-based traffic information generation and verification business, it will contribute to alleviating urban traffic congestion by providing congestion time and congestion section prediction information to public institutions and general citizens without separate collection devices.

Additionally, by leveraging the characteristics of telecommunications big data, which allows real-time nationwide road information supply, SKT plans to expand the scope from existing vehicle-centered services to various demand-centered services such as personal mobility and support for transportation-vulnerable groups.
