Arson at 80-Year-Old Mother's Home Over Money Dispute... 50s Son Receives Suspended Sentence The court sentenced a man in his 50s to probation after he set fire to his house following an argument over money with his elderly mother while intoxicated.


[Asia Economy Reporter Kang Wooseok] A man in his 50s who set fire to his elderly mother's house after an argument over money was sentenced to probation.


The 1st Criminal Division of the Suncheon Branch of Gwangju District Court (Chief Judge Heo Jeonghun) announced on the 27th that A (59), who was indicted and detained on charges of arson of an occupied building, was sentenced to 2 years in prison with 3 years of probation.


He was also ordered to undergo probation and complete 80 hours of community service.


A is accused of setting fire on April 5th in the afternoon to an apartment in Yeosu-si, Jeollanam-do, where his mother B (84) lives.


It was investigated that A, intoxicated, had an argument with B over money and set fire to her clothes with a disposable lighter.


Although there were no casualties from the fire, the interior of the house was completely burned, causing property damage worth approximately 35 million won.


The court stated the sentencing reasons, saying, "The defendant not only endangered the life and property of his mother but also posed a serious risk to the lives and property of unspecified many, making the nature of the crime very grave," but added, "No casualties occurred due to the defendant's crime, he has no prior record of sentences exceeding fines, and he has reached a settlement with the building owner and is petitioning for leniency."
