[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Kim Gwi-yeol] Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province, attended a memorial event held on the 25th at the Chilgok Dabudong War Memorial Museum to mark the 2nd anniversary of the passing of the late General Baek Seon-yeop (1920?2020).
The event was hosted by the National Elders Council and the Baek Seon-yeop General Memorial Project Association, and organized by the Daegu·Gyeongbuk Headquarters of the Baek Seon-yeop General 2nd Anniversary Memorial Committee.
To commemorate General Baek Seon-yeop, who passed away two years ago, this was the second memorial event held following last year.
The event was attended by Lee Sang-hoon, Standing Chairman of the National Elders Council; Kwon Young-hae and Hong Jae-cheol, Co-Chairmen; Song Young-geun, Co-Representative of the Baek Seon-yeop Memorial Committee; Lee Jun-seok, Leader of the People Power Party; Lee Cheol-woo, Governor of Gyeongbuk Province; Lim Jong-sik, Superintendent of Gyeongbuk Provincial Office of Education; Kang Eun-hee, Superintendent of Daegu Metropolitan Office of Education; National Assembly members Jeong Hee-yong, Ahn Cheol-soo, and Lee In-seon; as well as heads of Daegu and Gyeongbuk institutions and over 500 Korean War veterans.
The event proceeded under the theme “Never Forget the Korean War, Protect the Republic of Korea!” and included flower offerings and incense burning, memorial speeches, a tribute speech, screening of a memorial video about the general, a memorial performance, singing of patriotic songs, reading of a resolution, and three cheers of “Manse.”
General Baek Seon-yeop was a key figure in the Battle of Dabudong, defending the Nakdong River front and saving the Republic of Korea from North Korean invasion.
A famous anecdote from the war recounts him saying, “I will lead the fight. If I retreat, shoot me first,” stopping fleeing soldiers.
Thanks to the victory at the Battle of Dabudong, the South Korean and UN forces established a bridgehead at the Nakdong River, which made the Incheon Landing Operation possible.
In his memorial speech, Governor Lee Cheol-woo said, “We will carry on the spirit of General Baek Seon-yeop, who always put the homeland and liberal democracy before himself, and with a heavier sense of responsibility, protect Gyeongbuk Province and the Republic of Korea.”
