70 Members of Nowon Calligraphy Association Participate, Showcasing Over 200 Fans with Calligraphy and Paintings... Summer Actions for Carbon Neutrality... Reduce Air Conditioner and Fan Use, Actively Use Fans
[Asia Economy Reporter Jongil Park] Nowon-gu (District Mayor Oh Seung-rok) will hold the 'Nowon Seonpungjeon (Fan Exhibition)' at the Gyeongchun Forest Trail Gallery.
This exhibition was prepared to reflect on the virtues of our ancestors who, in the days before air conditioners or electric fans, exchanged fans as gifts wishing each other good health during the summer, and to appreciate the wisdom of our ancestors embodied in fans.
Additionally, it is expected to contribute to forming a consensus on reducing the use of air conditioners and fans this summer as a carbon-neutral practice for the planet, and actively utilizing fans instead.
A total of about 70 members of the Nowon Calligraphy Association participated in this 'Nowon Seonpungjeon.' They will showcase over 200 unique fan artworks featuring members' writings and paintings on various types of fans, from single-fold to folding fans.
The exhibition will be held for 14 days from June 24 to July 7 at the Gyeongchun Forest Trail Gallery located in Hwarangdae Railroad Park, Nowon-gu (29-1 Gongneung-dong, Nowon-gu).
Visitors can view the exhibition free of charge without prior reservation by visiting the gallery on weekdays from 2 PM to 8 PM and on weekends from 12 PM to 8 PM. The gallery is closed on Mondays and public holidays.
In the past, fans were essential items for ancestors to endure the hot summer. They not only created a breeze to cool down the heat but also provided shade to avoid the scorching summer sunlight.
Moreover, fans decorated with poetry and paintings served as accessories that revealed the owner's dignity and personality.
The Hapjukseon, a traditional Korean fan made by thinly shaving bamboo bark and attaching it in two layers, then folding and applying hanji paper, features an ergonomically curved handle designed for easy grip, demonstrating the exceptional sensibility of our ancestors.
The 'Gyeongchun Forest Trail Gallery,' which opened in May last year, is located in Hwarangdae Railroad Park in Gongneung-dong. Although it is a small gallery with a total floor area of 144㎡, converted from four containers previously used as material warehouses, it has gained attention through various exhibitions.
Notable exhibitions include last year's 'Aisa Tal (Mask) Exhibition' and 'Nam June Paik Print Exhibition,' followed by 18 large and small exhibitions this year such as 'Taekwon V and Our Cartoon Story.'
District Mayor Oh Seung-rok said, “This meaningful exhibition allows us to learn about our unique culture through the essential summer item, the fan,” adding, “We will continue to expand opportunities for residents to enjoy culture in their daily lives through diverse exhibitions.”
