Presentation at the 41st Meeting of the International Telecommunication Union Mobile Telecommunications Working Group
[Asia Economy Reporter Cha Min-young] The Ministry of Science and ICT announced on the 26th that it has completed the development of the '6G Future Technology Trend Report' at the 41st International Telecommunication Union Radiocommunication Sector (ITU-R WP5D) meeting held in Switzerland this month.
ITU is the international standardization organization leading the international standards for 6G. In 2023, ITU presented the 6G vision, which serves as a standardization blueprint containing the 6G target services, key performance indicators, and standardization work schedule, and plans to promote the development of international 6G standards by 2030.
Korea serves as the co-chair country of the working group researching 6G future technology trends (Professor Oh Seong-jun of Korea University) and presents future technology trends through reports reflecting domestic 6G research and development (R&D) strategies and new technology demands from industry, academia, and research institutes.
The advanced wireless access technologies and wireless network technologies included in this report are expected to be reflected in the 6G vision, which defines the future 6G target services and required performance.
Korea, as the chair country of the 6G vision group, also held workshops to promote the development of the 6G vision and introduced the progress of ITU's 6G vision work. It presented the 6G vision development and research directions to 193 ITU member countries and external organizations and encouraged international cooperation.
Kim Jeong-sam, Director of the Information Security Network Policy Division at the Ministry of Science and ICT, said, "Korea is leading ITU's discussions on future technologies and the 6G vision, securing global leadership in 6G." He added, "Since the 6G vision provides guidance for global 6G research and development, frequency acquisition, standardization, and commercialization, we will spare no support for international standardization so that leading the 6G vision can lead to securing Pre-6G technologies and preempting 6G standards."
