[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Chun-han] On the 23rd, the Democratic Party of Korea held a National Assembly members' workshop at a resort in Yesan, Chungnam, where they exchanged opinions to find a way out for the party, which is in crisis after defeats in the presidential and local elections.
In the afternoon, Democratic Party lawmakers shared the results of the presidential and local election evaluation meetings conducted by the group of first and second-term lawmakers and the Better Future group, followed by a free discussion lasting about two hours. Spokesperson Shin Hyun-young said in a briefing, "There was a reflective time discussing that we should not blame others for the election results but think it is our fault and what needs to be improved," adding, "There was also an opinion that the leadership and those who led the election should take responsibility together."
Criticism of pro-Moon and pro-Myung faction fandom politics also emerged. Spokesperson Shin stated, "The problem is not the passionate supporters themselves, but the abusive language and verbal violence in fandom politics, so there was a discussion that we need to boldly draw a line with them."
Since the theme of this workshop was livelihood, competence, and innovation, there were significant mentions of the need to preempt progressive agendas in policy areas such as real estate, fairness issues, and the energy crisis to demonstrate capability.
There were many voices emphasizing the need to properly check and monitor the Yoon Seok-yeol government. In particular, it was argued that proper confirmation hearings are necessary for ministerial candidates who have not yet been appointed to prevent the current government's unilateral personnel decisions. Spokesperson Shin said, "There was a discussion that to properly fulfill the role as the opposition party, the National Assembly organization should be formed promptly," adding, "The necessity of electing the chairperson first was also mentioned."
