[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Lee Seryeong] After a man in his 60s who ate naengmyeon at a restaurant in Gimhae, Gyeongnam, died from food poisoning, health authorities and the police have launched an investigation.
According to Gimhae City on the 23rd, 34 customers who ate at the restaurant between May 15 and 18 contracted food poisoning, and among them, a man in his 60s, Mr. A, was hospitalized and passed away three days later.
An autopsy by the National Forensic Service revealed that Salmonella bacteria causing food poisoning had penetrated his blood vessels, causing inflammation throughout his body, and that Mr. A died from septic shock.
On the 18th of this month, a hygiene inspection request was reported to the local government, but the Gimhae City official reportedly only checked the internal cleanliness and left.
The next day, a report was received that about ten customers who used the same restaurant complained of diarrhea symptoms and were hospitalized, and the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety tested the food at the restaurant. Salmonella bacteria were detected in the egg garnish, leading health authorities and the police to begin an epidemiological investigation.
Gimhae City reportedly responded in a phone call with a media outlet that since there was only one food poisoning report at the time, it was not subject to specimen collection.
This famous naengmyeon restaurant has been suspended from operation from the 17th until July 16 for violating standards regarding the detection of food poisoning bacteria in prepared foods.
