[Asia Economy Reporter Eunmo Koo] HiteJinro has filed a claim for damages against truck owners who actively participated in the illegal protests organized by the Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU) Cargo Solidarity.
On the 21st, HiteJinro stated in a press release, "We filed the first lawsuit for damages on the 17th," and added, "We are also proceeding with provisional seizure orders against active participants as well as injunctions to prohibit obstruction of business activities related to the illegal protests." HiteJinro further explained, "Starting with this claim for damages, we will continuously collect and pursue claims for damages incurred by the company."
Truck owners affiliated with the freight transport subcontractors of HiteJinro’s Icheon and Cheongju plants joined the Cargo Solidarity in March and have been on strike. In particular, they refused to transport goods even after the general strike of the Cargo Solidarity ended on the 14th. Due to the truck owners’ strike, the Icheon plant experienced a decrease in shipments and even a temporary halt in production earlier this month, while the Cheongju plant’s shipment volume dropped to about one-tenth of the usual level.
Regarding the current shipment levels, HiteJinro explained, "As of yesterday, the cumulative shipment volume since the strike is about 80% of the usual level," and added, "Stability is being restored through the active cooperation of wholesalers and various clients, the efforts of employees, and principled law enforcement by the police." They also stated, "We have signed an additional transport contract with one company, so a total of two companies are currently handling shipments."
