Intangible Heritage Center Special Lecture 'K-Traditional Liquor and Intangible Cultural Heritage Stories'

The Charm and Transformation of Makgeolli Told by Heo Simyeong

Makgeolli is a representative alcoholic beverage of Korea. Records of its brewing methods date back to the Three Kingdoms period. It is still brewed throughout the Korean Peninsula and was recognized for its traditional knowledge value by being designated as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage (Makgeolli Brewing) last year. The National Intangible Heritage Center will hold a special lecture titled "K-Traditional Liquor and Intangible Cultural Heritage" at 2 p.m. on the 22nd in the international conference room. This is a pre-event for the World Intangible Cultural Heritage Forum opening on September 21. The theme is "The Charm and Transformation of Makgeolli." Liquor critic Heo Si-myeong, who sparked the humanities trend in traditional liquor, will take the stage. Based on his experience as the principal of the Makgeolli School, he will share various stories about the history of Makgeolli, traditional knowledge, and its socio-cultural value. He will have a dialogue with Yang Jin-jo, head of the Intangible Heritage Promotion Division at the National Intangible Heritage Center, and demonstrate Makgeolli brewing. For details and registration, please refer to the websites of the National Intangible Heritage Center and the UNESCO Asia-Pacific Intangible Cultural Heritage Center.
