Gwangju Veterans Affairs Office Selected and Promoted Key Task for 'Unregistered 5·18 Merit Recipients Discovery'

[Asia Economy Honam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Yoon Jamin] The Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office (Director Im Jong-bae) announced on the 16th that it has selected the "Discovery of Unregistered May 18 Merit Recipients" project as a key task and is currently carrying it out.

Since early this year, the Gwangju Veterans Affairs Office, with the cooperation of Gwangju Metropolitan City, has conducted a cross-check to find individuals who received compensation decisions for the May 18 Democratic Movement but have not been registered as May 18 merit recipients or bereaved families.

Through verification of eligibility-related facts and personal information, they discovered 217 individuals who are survivors or have eligible bereaved family members for registration.

Since March, among the discovered candidates eligible for registration residing in the jurisdiction, 12 individuals themselves were sent registration application notices to proceed with May 18 merit recipient registration.

They plan to continue discovering unregistered May 18 merit recipients by guiding eligible bereaved families and notifying veterans affairs offices in other regions as necessary.

A representative of the Gwangju Regional Veterans Affairs Office stated, "We will continue to lead regulatory innovation for the honor and support of national merit recipients to ensure that no one misses out on support due to lack of awareness of the system," adding, "We will persistently promote proactive administrative projects to discover blind spots."
