Pohang-si Bongjwa Village Selected as a Pilot Village for Carbon Neutral Energy Transition!

Pohang-si Bongjwa Village Selected as a Pilot Village for Carbon Neutral Energy Transition! Bongjwa Village in Pohang City, selected as a pilot village for carbon-neutral energy transition.

[Asia Economy Yeongnam Reporting Headquarters Reporter Dongguk Lee] Bongjwa Village in Gigae-myeon, Pohang City, Gyeongbuk Province, has been selected as a ‘Carbon Neutral Energy Transition Pilot Village’ by Gyeongbuk Province.

This project was planned to respond to the climate change crisis and promote the transition to a low-carbon society. The designated targets are administrative districts or natural villages with communities of 20 or more households, or apartment complexes with more than 300 households.

Bongjwa Village, selected as an energy transition pilot village, will receive a certificate issuance, plaque installation, commemorative tree planting, and support of 10 million KRW annually for three years for the village community. With a project budget of 165 million KRW, it will carry out carbon-neutral practice projects such as ▲energy self-sufficient village exhibition hall ▲introduction of shared bicycles ▲integrated monitoring of renewable energy ▲installation of hybrid streetlights, and will receive support for renewable energy installation next year.

Bongjwa Village plans to take the lead in carbon-neutral practices led by residents through a three-stage process of energy self-sufficiency formation phase → expansion phase → advancement phase, aiming for 100% renewable energy facility distribution rate and 80% energy self-sufficiency rate.

To save energy and improve efficiency, the village aims to induce voluntary participation in the distribution of renewable energy facilities and support the village’s energy self-sufficiency foundation, expanding renewable energy production and actively discovering village communities to create a citizen-led energy self-sufficient village.

Lee Kang-deok, Mayor of Pohang City, said, “Citizens’ energy costs are increasing due to continuous heatwaves and environmental changes,” adding, “I am very pleased that Bongjwa Village is supported as a carbon-neutral pilot village, and we will do our best to ensure stable energy supply and improve self-sufficiency in the future.”
