[Asia Economy Reporter Donghoon Jeong] KG Steel announced on the 16th that it has developed and successfully mass-produced an 'antiviral hot-dip galvanized steel sheet (product name BioCoat Plus)' that not only blocks bacteria and mold with antibacterial and antifungal functions but also has performance to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 virus.
KG Steel has become the first in Korea to develop and mass-produce a product that simultaneously satisfies basic physical properties including corrosion resistance and COVID-19 antiviral performance.
KG Steel stated that it received recognition of 99.6% efficacy in antiviral performance validity tests commissioned to the Korea Standard Testing & Research Institute (KSTR). This is thanks to the application of a high-concentration special antiviral additive in BioCoat Plus.
KG Steel expects demand for BioCoat Plus to be generated in facilities such as air circulation ducts in logistics centers, aseptic pharmaceutical facilities requiring high cleanliness, food manufacturing plants like kimchi and dumplings, and early childhood education facilities such as daycare centers and kindergartens. Since these facilities have a great need to circulate fresh air indoors to prevent the spread of respiratory diseases, BioCoat Plus is anticipated to be applied there first.
A KG Steel official said, "Considering the increasing demands from industries regarding life and safety, the demand for high-performance products like BioCoat Plus is expected to gradually increase," adding, "In particular, BioCoat Plus is expected to be proactively applied in spaces where blocking virus transmission through droplets is primarily reviewed."
