Seoul Donuimun Museum Village Installs Large Media Facade on Information Center Exterior... Media Art Show Opens

[Asia Economy Reporter Lim Cheol-young] The Seoul Metropolitan Government has created a large-scale media facade on the entire exterior wall (8.5m×11m) of the village information center within Donuimun Museum Village and held the outdoor media art show opening ceremony on the 16th. Starting from the 17th, the latest media art works will be exhibited year-round from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. daily in the yard of Donuimun Museum Village.

The newly introduced media facade attracts more attention as it is an irregular shape modeled after the exterior wall of the village information center, rather than a typical rectangular LED screen. In particular, the screen was produced preserving the building’s windows, providing a unique visual experience.

The work is a new piece by the world-renowned media artist Lee Lee-nam, consisting mainly of a ‘main theme work’ and ‘seasonal works.’ The year-round main theme work, "Sihwa Ilryul (市花一律)," with the subtitle "Seoul, united by 100 years of flowers," expresses Seoul’s 100-year history blossoming like flowers through splendid light, sound, and music. Seasonal works are shown in summer (June to August) and winter (November to December), presenting pieces suited to each season.

On the 16th, the opening ceremony featured an ‘Art Street Dance’ performance that complemented the media art, enhancing the audience’s focus on the works. The opening performance included the street dance team ‘Animation Crew,’ who gained recognition with outstanding performances on the American NBC show "America’s Got Talent."

As a special program linked to the media art show, a ‘Conversation with the Artist’ with Lee Lee-nam will also be held. It will take place on the 28th at the Urban Architecture Center within Donuimun Museum Village, and participation is available through online advance reservation. Artist Lee Lee-nam said, "Using the LED screen that preserves the exact shape of the village information center’s front wall as a canvas to conceive the story of Seoul’s 100 years was a new and interesting project as an artist," adding, "I am glad to be able to meet viewers more often through this public art media facade work."

Starting with Lee Lee-nam’s work, the Seoul Metropolitan Government plans to discover and exhibit works by emerging media artists through a media art contest next year. This is expected to create synergy by providing a new platform for emerging artists’ activities.

Meanwhile, various channels have been prepared to enjoy the Donuimun Museum Village media art show online as well. An ‘authentication shot event’ is also prepared for citizens visiting the site. During the media art open week, citizens who film the media art video and take an authentication shot, then upload it on their Instagram with a hashtag, will receive a small gift.

Joo Yong-tae, Director of the Seoul Metropolitan Government’s Culture Headquarters, said, “The ‘Seoul 100 Years Story’ media art show is a newly attempted digital emotional cultural content in Donuimun Museum Village, a representative analog emotional space, and is expected to enhance the cultural imagination of Seoul citizens,” adding, “Since it operates continuously from day to night in the outdoor yard, we hope anyone can comfortably come and enjoy the media art show.”
